The golden ring of J.R.R. Tolkien fame may not be the best symbol for this bill (my prrreeeecccciiiioooooouuusss...), but the National Diabetes Clinical Care Commission Act (NDCCA) would act exactly like it... it would "rule them all." And that's a good thing.
The NDCCA Needs Our Help
This bill will create a commission that will oversee several federal agencies who need to talk to one another about diabetes issues. Right not, that's not happening. The new commission will focus on diabetes activities and help the federal government to better address the disease, in a fiscally responsible and effective manner. The act is budget neutral, and prior experience suggest this commission can have a significant positive impact on care. The journal "Diabetes Care," June 1994 highlights the success of the National Diabetes Advisory Board, including the pivotal Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT) that has defined modern diabetes care.
Congress Needs to Put a Ring on It.
You can read AACE’s press release in response to the Energy and Commerce vote here. The bill seeks to coordinate the federal response to diabetes through a limited time commission. This commission is an approach that proved successful a generation ago, leading to trials that proved the value of tight control. Advances in diabetes medications and devices are an opportunity to be successful coordinating innovative diabetes care again. We need this commission and as it's budget neutral, that means it won't cost U.S. taxpayers anything in the end. So we need Congress to put a Ring on the NDCCA bill and make it legal, so it can rule them all.
